Detroit Audubon serves its 8000+ constituents mainly through the efforts of its volunteers. As a small regional nonprofit, we rely heavily on volunteers to help with our important conservation and education projects! From habitat restoration to youth education, outreach and tabling to administrative assistance, we have many opportunities for volunteers with a variety of talents! The only qualification necessary is a desire to assist Detroit Audubon in its mission to promote the protection and enjoyment of birds and nature.

Research Volunteering Positions:

Safe Passage Project
We are looking for volunteers who would be interested in monitoring buildings in SE Michigan during Spring and Fall migration. This would involve the collection of bird specimens and the possible handling of injured birds to transport them safely to a Wildlife Rehabilitation Facility. Necessary training will be provided. Grassland Bird Surveys
We are looking for experienced birders to help with our Grassland Bird Surveys, which are conducted once a week each June. For more information about our Grassland Bird Monitoring project, please click here.
Don’t have much experience with bird identification? Attend one of our field trips for some training!
Black Tern Monitoring
We are looking for volunteers that are interested in joining our Research Coordinator in St. Clare Flats for a full day of monitoring efforts. These monitoring efforts will be done two days per week from mid-May until the end of July. This will involve being exposed to the elements in a boat for up to 6 hours per day, while monitoring Black Tern nests, chicks and adults. Necessary training will be provided. Public Programs and Tabling Events
We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us with our public education events and tabling events! This would involve helping us set-up and take down information tables, help with craft preparation, our traveling bookstore, and of course participate in some education and outreach about Detroit Audubon and bird conservation! Field Trip Leaders
Detroit Audubon is seeking experienced birders to lead some of our field trips for 2023. We will offer personal training and work closely with our new field trip leaders until they are comfortable leading on their own or with a co-lead. Our calendar of events is posted here!

Flyway Articles and Photographs Needed
Detroit Audubon’s seasonal magazine, the Flyway, includes articles and photographs describing our many programs, events and research projects throughout the year. Getting a volunteer photographer to attend some of our events would be a big help! If you are interested in science writing or natural resources and bird conservation writing, we would love to hear from you!
Help in our Midtown Office
Our Office Administrator needs help with processing Thank You Letters and Welcome Letters that go out to our members each month. Getting assistance with general office organization, filing, and cleanliness is also needed and would be much appreciated.
