Learn more about this joint research effort to understand the reproductive success of this beautiful bird. Our team is currently trying to band adults and chicks, which will inform conservation Black Tern 4strategies. Black Terns are a priority species for Michigan, and all the Great Lakes states have the species on their action plans. This breeding colony is a major source of Black Terns, which have been in decline since the 1960s, for reasons not completely understood. This cruise will help support our research endeavors.

We will maintain a respectful distance from the nests, so as not to disturb the breeding colony, but will still have excellent views. Detroit Audubon is happy to provide binoculars (for an even closer look) and refreshments.
