The Memorial Day Weekend Nature Getaway
By: Sophia Jachman
Every year my cousins and I walk down together to the fire pit for the campfire. After the fire is lit, we sing funny songs about nature with the rest of the campers. Then we roast marshmallows for s'mores; you can't have a good campfire without s'mores! The campfire is one of my favorite activities at the Detroit Audubon Society Memorial Day camp out. I have gone with my family for years. Some of my other favorite activities are going to Tawas Point, Lumberman's Monument, the challenge course, and eating the food. We all stay at Loon Lake near Hale.
I also love meeting new people there, being close to nature, and learning about birds. I have lots of memories from the camp out. My cousins and I really enjoy walking down to the lake. We play tether ball and basketball, and we also ride the boats. One of my favorite memories from the challenge course for kids is when we get to swing on a rope across a stream. When we go to Tawas Point, I like spotting different kinds of birds. It is so fun staying in cabins and going out of town for the weekend! I have such a great time every year at the camp out. I have so much fun with my family and I can't wait until next year! Hope to see you there!
